Erlene Manohar (Philippines)
Focus of Fellowship: Dubbed the ‘tree of life’ by the millions of people who depend on it, coconut supplies more than 100 different products including food and drink, fodder for livestock, fibre and building materials. Yet it is grown mostly by small holder farmers who live in marginal and often very poor areas. Through COGENT, its coconut network, IPGRI has been working over the past few years with the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) on a ‘poverty reduction’ project designed to sustainably improve the livelihoods of coconut farmers. Erlene Manohar’s research will build on this work by helping to scale up and disseminate proven approaches to using coconut genetic diversity to create new products that villages can use to improve their livelihoods.

Claid Mujaju (Zimbabwe)
Focus of Fellowship: Claid Mujaju’s work will also focus on protecting forest species. Zimbabwe’s forests were once rich reservoirs of fruit, wood, timber and forage. Local communities rely on these forests for their food and livelihoods but massive deforestation has led to the loss of much of this diversity. In collaboration with the Zimbabwean National Plant Genetic Resources Centre and the National Genebank of Zimbabwe, Claid will work to establish ‘community forest gardens’ to enable and empower these communities to protect the biodiversity on which they depend. As farmers teach younger generations how to tend to the gardens, they will pass on their priceless knowledge about this diversity ensuring that it is protected and used for years to come.

Geoffrey M. Muluvi (Kenya)
Focus of Fellowship: His research will contribute to efforts to safeguard a tree called Brachyleana huillensis, thereby also protecting the livelihoods of the many people who depend on it. Wood from the Brachyleana huillensis tree is the most popular in Kenya for making artifacts. Kenya’s wood carving industry is lucrative, earning an export value of US$ 20 million a year and supporting an estimated 60, 000 woodcarvers with another 300, 000 dependants. Yet, the success of this industry comes at a heavy price. To satisfy demand, around 50, 000 trees are cut down annually and with the wood carving industry expected to expand even further, concerns are growing about the industry’s sustainability. Increased trade with the West has led to various initiatives to conserve the tree and to promote the use of alternative tree species. Unfortunately, these have not been entirely successful and Brachyleana huillensis is rapidly disappearing from Kenya’s forests.
Muluvi will work to assess the amount and distribution of the genetic diversity of Brachyleana huillensis in Kenya. This information will be crucial when collecting samples of the tree to conserve in genebanks and will be necessary to decide on the best sites for in situ conservation. His work will be carried out in collaboration with the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) and Kenya’s Forest Department.
