The sponsoring Center is IPGRI.

"I am very much delighted to know the acceptance and funding of my proposal. This grant will significantly help me to continue my ongoing studies on the genetic background of the wild banana Musa balbisiana, an important progenitor of the banana crop of the world."

Geetha Rani

Focus of Fellowship: Characterization of genetic diversity of finger millet - Eleusine coracana. The objective of the study is to undertake characterization of the finger millet collection in the ICRISAT genebank in order to identify suitable varieties for efffective utilization, better yield, better cooking or eating quality and resistance to biotic and abiotic streeses. The study will identify suitable varieties for the local environment in India.

The sponsoring Center is IPGRI.

Report of findings. February 2005.

"On receipt of the announcement, I am delighted and my dream comes true in getting the prestigious IFAR fellowship. The study would make significant contribution in making tribal and rural poor getting access and use of germplasm conserved in the genebank."

Focus of Fellowship: Modelling geneflow to assess the risk of introducing transgenic varieties into traditional cropping systems of maize in Western Kenya.

The sponsoring Center is IPGRI.

Report of findings. December 2004.

"I am extremely delighted and grateful for the IFAR grant as it will enable me make my contribution to scientific knowledge in keeping with the objective of IFAR, to support development of agriculture. Developing countries need to keep up with research on emerging issues such as the introduction of genetically modified crops. In endeavor to explore and quantify factors affecting geneflow to assess the risk posed to biodiversity by introduction of genetically modified crops in traditional cropping systems of western Kenya."

Helga Rodriguez von Platen

Focus of Fellowship: The objective of this research is to obtain a molecular fingerprint of the banana hybrids developed at the Fundacion Hondurena de Investigacion Agricola with microsatellite markers and validate its usefulness as a means to uniquely identify the hybrids within a Costa Rican collection.

The sponsoring Center is IPGRI.

Report of findings. February 2005.
